Ruth Shany was born in Germany and in 1939 emigrated with her parents to Shanghai, China, where she lived for 10 years. During this period she studied Chinese painting on silk under the Japanese art professor Taishi Nishio.

In 1949 she arrived in Israel. She went to Costa Rica and Nicaragua with her husband, where he served as Israeli ambassador.

Only in the years 1972 - 78, during her stay in Geneva and Paris, did she finally settle down on full-time painting. She participated in many group exhibitions and was invited to show her work at numerous one-woman shows in Israel, Germany, U.S.A. and Costa Rica.

Since her return from Europe in 1978, she spends her summers in Safed, where she exhibits her work in her own gallery.

Ruth Shany is a member of the association of Painters and Sculptors in Israel and member of the Artists' Colony in Safed.

From the Press:

"Her works are a combination of the famous Chinese delicacy and her own European culture."
- North China Daily News, 1948.

"The influence of Asiatic silk painting can still be perceived, but in a much more refined and subtle form, inviting the visitors to take a closer look ... her works are simply appealingly beautiful; in them, nature's fascination comes alive."
- Rheinische Post, Germany, 1989.

The Creation Book

The Creation book contains prints of eight paintings by Ruth Shany, each one portrays a stage in the creation as described in the Bible. The first painting portrays creation in the beginning and each of the next seven portrays each of the seven days of creation.

On each painting, to the left, the relevant Hebrew text from the Bible is printed. On the page next to each painting, the same text is printed in English and German.

The Origin of My Creation

Several years ago my husband and I spent two weeks on the shores of the Dead Sea. On one of those nights I awoke and could not fall asleep again. I sat down at the window and looked out into the night. There were millions of stars, illuminating the dark blue, almost black sky. I was deeply impressed by the total silence and the fantastic sight. I do not know how long I sat there until I noticed the appearance over the Moab mountains of reddish stripe that gradually became larger and brighter. Breathless, I watched the wonderful display of colors and the thought came to me that the Creation must have begun this way.

This thought did not leave me. I took my Bible and reread the chapter on the creation of the world in seven days. Moved by an inner urge, I painted My Creation, reflecting the wonder I had experienced.
